SET issues Monitoring notice for geomagnetic storms starting as early as May 29, 2024

LOS ANGELES. Space Environment Technologies (SET) has issued a Monitoring notice for geomagnetic storms starting as early as May 29, 2024 and extending to June 8, 2024 above the level of G0 quiet conditions. A Monitoring notice is issued when geomagnetic conditions are being actively monitored using information that is available at the time of issue. The information leading to this Monitoring notice includes the expected return of the strong solar active region (AR) 13664 that created the Gannon superstorm on May 10-11, 2024. In addition, this AR has been identified by SET’s persistence and recurrence algorithms as having a high probability of producing X-class flares. If large flares occur, which can be associated with a coronal mass ejections (CMEs) usually in coincidence with flares of class M5 or above, and if they are pointed in the general direction of Earth, they can cause large geomagnetic storms.
